At Acorn, we’re celebrating 25 years of housebuilding. Our different by design ethos has helped us establish a reputation for creating high quality homes and buildings that are as unique as the communities they serve. As we continue to innovate and evolve, we take a look at how far we’ve come and contemplate our vision for the future.
Where it all began
Acorn Property Group began in 1995 with just one office in London and three employees. It was from here that we started building our reputation as specialists in bespoke housing projects.
From the outset, our priority has been about designing and building spaces that are ‘different by design’. For us, this means considering every venture as an individual endeavour, identifying all its merits and blending existing structures and environments with contemporary design. It is, says Julian Hampson, Group Design Director, about ‘taking a unique approach’.
Our early projects focused on central London and regenerating existing buildings to include a combination of modern, desirable city-centre apartments and commercial space.
In 2006, we opened our second office, Acorn Blue, in Newquay. Our presence in the South West and in Cornwall in particular has given us an opportunity to see first-hand what local buyers and communities really want in an area where demand constantly outstrips supply.
It’s this unique approach and ability to fulfil both buyer and community needs, that has helped us become the award-winning housebuilder we’ve become. Today, the Acorn Property Group is made up of more than 130 committed team members eager to build on our success.
Innovative design for everyday living
Our projects are diverse and fulfil a wide range of needs. From our city collection to rural collection, our strength lies in designing and creating spaces that people want to live and work in. Fundamentally, says Melanie Omirou, Executive Group Managing Director and Funding Director, it’s about constructing ‘a building that enhances its local environment and the lives of its occupiers’.
Doing this often means facing construction challenges but our flexible approach to planning and problem solving has enabled us to seek innovative ways to overcome these hurdles.
Demonstrating this, is our Brandon Yard project in Bristol. Here, we were able to restore a Grade II listed building as well as create a new apartment block on a derelict site. Our construction team carefully considered the fragility of the abandoned buildings and calculated how best to stabilise the existing structures while maintaining the historical façade.
Crucially, we’ve also been able to secure and protect local biodiversity exemplified by our Cottrell Gardens project in the Vale of Glamorgan. After discovering the site was home to 150 Great Crested Newts, we relocated them to breeding ponds and integrated hedgerows and verges into our design in order to keep vital corridors for wildlife.
Thoughtful and innovative design also considers wider environmental needs. For example, at the Old Printworks in Frome, Somerset, we’ve included sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDs) These collect rainwater from houses and roads and then slowly releases it back into the River Frome.
Principles we work to and our vision for the future
At Acorn, we’re committed to producing the best outcomes for all our stakeholders. This includes the environment, regional and local communities, as well as investors.
As a result, we take great pride in creating and constructing buildings that complement and enhance their local environments. For us, it’s about creating desirable, practical and sustainable homes and communities.
As we look forward to another 25 years and beyond, we want to build on these principles. In particular, we want to continue our focus on sustainability in order to protect our environment and wildlife which enriches all our lives.
As an industry leader, we already exceed standards for carbon emissions but we’ve pledged to do even more with the launch of Acorn Green. This initiative will document the ways in which we implement sustainability principles and focus on how we adapt and respond to the challenges of driving down our carbon footprint.
We hope that by continually challenging ourselves, we will raise the bar not just for ourselves, but for the industry as a whole. It’s for this reason that we’re excited to see what the future holds for us and all our stakeholders.
