A Vision for the Future

Located just minutes from the Clifton Suspension Bridge and The Downs, this iconic site will be transformed into a carefully designed new community. The development will feature a diverse mix of open-market and affordable homes, ranging from one to five bedrooms, catering to a variety of residents. In addition, many of the existing historic buildings and structures will be meticulously restored, preserving the site's rich heritage for future generations.

One of the most exciting aspects of this transformation is that, for the first time in its 186-year history, the beautiful historic gardens will be open to the public—free of charge. This ensures that this cherished green space remains accessible to all, reinforcing the importance of conservation and community within Clifton.

Supporting Conservation Efforts

Beyond providing much-needed housing, this project will also play a key role in supporting the Bristol Zoological Society’s mission: Saving Wildlife Together. Proceeds from the sale will fund the development of a new conservation zoo at the Bristol Zoo Project, furthering critical wildlife protection efforts. Additionally, the beloved entrance building will be repurposed into the Clifton Conservation Hub, featuring a café, exhibition space, educational facilities, and a new home for the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project.

Looking Ahead

The sale has been agreed with planning permission, and as we move forward, the Society continues to respond to a judicial review of Bristol City Council’s decision.

This project represents a truly special opportunity to honour Bristol Zoo Gardens’ legacy while breathing new life into the site. We look forward to sharing further updates as we embark on this exciting journey to create a vibrant, sustainable, and historic community.
